The Western Fires Back
Of all the genres in modern video games none has been as overlooked as the western. Recently while heralding the release of Red Dead Redemption Nylon Magazine (May, 2010) lamented the lack of decent video games centered on the rich scenery and sub plots of the traditional American western. While war battle zones, outer space and imaginary post-apocalyptic wastelands have no shortage of video games based in reality and fantasy the seemingly perfect western setting has had a long time making it to the video game spotlight. https://nureenofficialblog.blogspot.com/2019/01/the-western-fires-back.html
Red Dead Redemption, a continuation of Red Dead Revolver, finally gives the western genre some hot lead to fight off the competition. Really, though, the western genre is a perfect fit for shooting action/adventure video games. Taking a cue from real history western setting video games never lack for targets and firefights. From hostile natives, gangs and bandits, wild wolves and bears, enemy settlers and armies from Mexico danger lurks around every tumbleweed and near every ravine.
While Red Dead Redemption does up the ante when it comes to western graphics the basic goal is simple, be a law-abiding Wyatt Earp white hat hero or a black hat, gun blazing thief like Jesse James and keep firing until the barrels are empty. https://nureenofficialblog.blogspot.com/2019/01/benefits-of-playing-online-free-games.html
Though Red Dead Redemption does restore faith in the industry's ability to use the great settings and plots of the American west it isn't the first game to do so. Several popular titles have been around awhile that feature classic cowboy tales and circle the wagon shoot outs with all kinds of badland characters. Gun Showdown, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood and Desperado's all borrow from the traditional western and deliver high quality graphics and fight scenes to engage gamers who relish a shooting action/adventure challenge.
What has baffled gamers for so long is why the western category hasn't been exploited more. Video games set in this genre have everything a game needs to captivate and entertain players including colorful characters, both good and bad, tricky to navigate terrain full of unexpected surprises including tribe ambushes and animal attacks, a variety of goals including reaching gold mines, the Pacific Ocean or starting a settlement in the wild west and the opportunity to cock back and fire in some of the heaviest firefights this side of BioShock. https://nureenofficialblog.blogspot.com
Westerns once held the imagination of every kid growing up in America but of late the amount of books, films and video games dealing with the Wild West have declined and for gamers this is not a good sign. While futuristic alien wars and sports games will always sell it will be interesting to see if Red Dead Redemption can't jump start a revival in the glory of the western genre.
